I’m going to use a dead tree we cut down to hang wind chimes. It’s larg and the bark is gone. What do I use to preserve it?

Hello Brenda, Thanks for your question.
I’m going to make some assumptions here. The first is that you want a low-maintenance coating, and the second is that you want the natural wood grain and color to show through for a rustic look.

I’d go over the surface very roughly and quickly with medium-grit sandpaper to clean the surface of dust and dirt. 60-100 grit would work.
Then I’d apply a matte polyurethane to seal the surface. You’ll need two or three coats to seal the surface properly. To create a key surface for the next application, give the surface a light scuff with 100 grit between each coat when dry.

I’d use a product similar to this one by Seal Once.

Good luck. I’d love to see a picture when you’re finished!
