One year old pressure treated deck rotting

Kim Morgan asked 2 years ago

My less than 1 year old pressure treated, SYP deck is rotting. I have no idea why and cannot get any help from the lumber store where it was purchased. Bottom line-I’m a 62 year old school teacher with a 5,000$ deck rotting away before my eyes. It has not had any stain or sealer yet, is not in an unusually wet place, and the wood is still stamped with things like SPIB, HT, No. 2, other numbers, and even dates less than two years old on some boards. I need help identifying the problem. I’m willing to pay for advice and send a piece of rotting wood, if necessary. Can you help me? Please let me know. Can send lots of pics. Thank you!

Hi, Kim. I’m sorry to hear about your problem.
From what you’re telling me, I wouldn’t expect SYP to be rotting one year into exterior installation if it had been pressure treated.
My first question is, are you sure it’s been pressure treated? In any event, I’d be contacting the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau at this link: https://www.spib.org/wood-services/lumber-complaint-claims They have a complaints division to deal with exactly your sort of problem, and they should help you get to the bottom of it.
