Hi Rose, glad to hear you want to bring new life into your mahogany.
Yes, boiled linseed oil can protect mahogany well; depending on the condition of the wood, sanding may be necessary for a better result.
You can also apply wood wax like this one by Howard, it will give additional protection to the wood and have a pleasant aroma. The oil penetrates into the wood and thus protects it while the wax stays on the surface and kind of seals the wood.
Water-based varnish would not adhere well to the oil, so I don’t recommend using it.
